Default Rte's 250 and 50

Afternoon all. I am planning a ride next week from Cleveland to Winchester, VA via Rte 250 and 50. Anyone been that way recently that could give me a heads up on good or bad about the route?

Thanks,

I ran 250 from Sandusky to Rt 50, and then 50 east to Winchester 2 years ago.

Be very careful on 250 between Moundsville and Fairmont WV. The heavy trucks and drilling rigs have literally destroyed the roadway in that area to the point where half of your lane (on a 2 lane road) may be not always be there, and you have no where to go, except into the lane of on-coming traffic, or off the road and down an embankment.

I was down that way 2 years ago and it was horrible. I think Tank has been down that way also with similar observations.

I'd find a way to detour around that section if possible.

The rest of the route was pretty good.

ALso, if you have an Ohio CCW, be aware that you can't legallly carry in MD, and a portion of Rt 50 runs through the tip of MD (not sure of the exact distance, but it's less than 10 miles, if my memory is right).

Be careful of the coal trucks.

I'm sitting in Staunton VA as I type this.I rode 250 from Moundsville to Fairmont on the way over. It's pretty much as Wahoo posted.Once you get up the hill going out of Moundsville the road is in pretty good condition until you get to Camaron.Just before Camaron 250 is in horrible condition and it stays that way all the way to Hundred. After Hundred 250 is in good condition to Fairmont.from Fairmont I got off of 250,went down I81 and picked up 33 all the way to Harrisonburg VA...33 is in very good condition, and a blast!!!

I'm going to ride 250 from Staunton to WV out and back tomorrow before I head south to a music festival on the BRP near Floyd VA,I'll let you know what I find.

BTW,I don't know your route through Ohio but I just found out today that. 147 has new pavement from Centerville to Bellaire.

+1 on route 33 from Seneca rocks to Harrisonburg VA. One of my favorite roads. We rode it twice over Memorial Day weekend.

Thanks for the input. I will have to spend a little more time in front of a map to come up with some alternatives. First thought was taking 2 all the way down to 50 before turning east. My final destination for the day is Charles Town, wv

One alternative is to get over to Washington PA however you can (I'm not sure where your starting point in located), then take Rt 40 east to Rt 219 South near Keysers Ridge. Take 219 south to 50, and run 50 east to Winchester as planned.

Rt 40 east of of Uniontown is a nice road. Goes by the Summit Hotel, Ft. Necessity, not far from Ohiopyle State park and falls, and Nemocolin Resort. Also crosses the Youghiogheny (sp?) lake.

Thanks for that suggestion Wahoo. I will certainly take a look at that.
I am starting from the east side of Cleveland.

Thanks for this heads up. We took this route and enjoyed the ride immensely. It was a picture perfect weather day and the roads were great.
