Default Robbinsville 2015

We left Lima about 8am Tuesday and successfully skirted around some rain south of town, but by Sidney there was no other option. Rain suits on we continued south on I75. Just north of Cincinnati we stopped at a roadside rest and took the rain gear off.

Things continued pretty well until somewhere in Kentucky where I75 became a parking lot. Three lanes were funneled into one. After sitting there for awhile in 90+ degrees, occasionally moving a fast as an unheard of 5mph, the Wing started getting higher on the temp gauge than I was comfortable with. So to the berm we went and at about 15 mph we able to cool it down. We past some riders on air cooled bikes who had just pulled over and parked. We figured that we lost at least an hour from when they started funneling down lanes until we actually got to the 4 miles of single construction area where traffic was up 35 mph......

From there it was uneventful until about 5pm when we got to the Dragon. Looked for Tank at the overlook and also cruised the parking lot when we got to the end then remembered he was coming in the next day.

On down 28 to the cabin

Wednesday we got a late start. We went into Robbinsville to fuel up and then took the Cherohala Skyway to Tellico Plains for lunch .

On the way back we stopped by Bald River Falls

In the afternoon we ride over to Bryson City for awhile.

In the evening we rode up to Fontana Dam.

Thursday morning we had breakfast at the cabin. Then we heading out for Cherokee.

It's sad to see all of the deteriorating places along the way.

We looked around Cherokee and found a store that looked like something my daughters would have if they owned a business.

Then we got on the Parkway

Had to stop at the top

The traffic was very light.

We enjoyed a great lunch

On the way back we stopped at Graveyard Fields

The lower falls were nice, but not a trek for a guy with a bad knee!

Waterrock Knob

Somewhere around mile marker 455 an oncoming rider signaled to slow down so I did. We watched for any debris on the road or someone stopped, but nothing for several curves and then there it was. I did a double take..... Elk are VERY large especially when it's on your side on the road. It was off the side of the road, but I would have liked to have been farther! After we got 100 yards past I thought "where's the camera!?!" lol Wish I had a pic of that.

Made a couple more stops in Cherokee and then a few more in Bryson City.

When got back we decided to go on past the cabin and went to Deal's Gap. We picked up a couple of things at the store and then checked to see if Tank was around, but unfortunately we didn't find him.

It was time to head to the cabin so we took 129 south.

From there we took Yellow Creek Road back across to Upper Tuskegee

My Brother IN=law is capturing, tagging and loading elk from forests in Pennsylvania to be shipped to Virginia and Tennessee this year. This program is in its third year. He's a wildlife biologist, works for DNR there. He's in charge of the Elk Habitat there in PA..

Looks like a good trip. Any idea how many miles from the begging sign to the highest point. I would really like to ride that sometime

Highest point is roughly at Mile Post 431. The end of the parkway in Cherokee is Milepost 469, so roughly 38 miles, unless you start at the other end.... then it's 431 miles from the beginning sign. LOL

The temps were in the 90s in Cherokee yesterday, but up on the Parkway it was in the 70s, beautiful riding weather! Traffic was very light.
