Default Lake Erie

Trying to plan out a ride along Lake Erie heading east to west direction. Figured we would travel to a little past Sandusky or just before Toledo. Anyone from up around there have any input on where to pick up lake road? How close to Cleveland?

Should we stay on Rt. 6 all the way to Sandusky? I figured once there we would head over to Marblehead. I didn't know if it was worth heading any farther west than that?

You can pick up Rt 6 (lake road) just west of downtown Cleveland in Rocky River, and head west. You'll go thru Rocky River, Bay Village, Avon Lake, Sheffield Lake, Lorain, Vermilion (don't forget to stop at Huggy's), Huron and then Sandusky.

West of Sandusky Rt 6 turns south towards Fremont, so you need to take Rt 2 across the Bay Bridge, then get off at the first exit and follow Rt 163 around towards Marblehead. The lighthouse is just before "downtown" Marblehead.

Just past there, you can take Rt 53 north and do the loop around Catawba Island. Mon Ami winery / restaurant is just north of 163.

Near the intersection of Rt 53 and Rt 163 there is a good restaurant called Diana's. One of our favorite places over that way.

As you head west towards Port Clinton, look for signs for the Liberty Aviation Museum. Nice little diner and small aircraft displays.

Further west is Port Clinton. Nice beach along the road, and there is a PT boat on display in the water downtown.

Beyond there, on Rt 2 is the Ottawa National Wildlife Preserve and further towards Toledo is Maumee Bay State Park.

If you ride to Toledo you could check out The National Museum of the Great Lakes and the old freighter that is moored there on the Maumee. I've toured the freighter but the museum just opened last year.

That museum was formerly located in Vermilion on the lakefront but they needed a much larger facility so they moved to Toledo.

I still have not made it over to see the new place but it's supposed to be pretty good.

Continuing w/ the follow-the-river theme:
From the museum, follow Rt65 s.w. along the river to Grand Rapids.
Then head south from town on c.r.189 to US6
A left turn will have you heading east towards Bowling Green, exit onto Rt616 into town.
Look for Rt64 & continue east to Rt105 taking that back to Oak Harbor, merging onto
Rt163 which will return you to Port Clinton.

After you cross the bay bridge on route 2, exit on the first exit, route 269 and keep to the right toward Bayshore Road. At the stop sign, if you turn left it will take you into Marblehead by going along the Bay. There's a small park just after you get into town that looks across the bay onto Sandusky and Cedar Point Amusement Park. In downtown Marblehead is a nice little restaurant called Avery's. Back to that stop sign, if you turn the other direction it will take you to the Liberty Aviation Museum that also has a very nice restaurant. Watch your speed at all times as they have no qualms about writing tickets around here.

I know it's a little late but if anyone wants a short read, I posted the report on my website.

When you're coming back to Vermilion to see our lighthouse, let me know. I'm less than 2 miles from it.

Lunch at Huggy's on Rt 6 (just east of the Vermilion river) is always good !
